It’s a new year, full of fresh starts and exciting possibilities. What better way to start things off than to take a look at the newest innovations from the Consumer Electronics Show, better known simply as CES. It is the 50th anniversary of CES and, according to their official press release, this year the show is the largest ever with an exhibit floor spanning more than 2.6 million square feet.
As always, this year’s event features the latest and greatest in virtual reality, smart homes, self-driving vehicles, robotics, wearables, health and fitness tech, and more.
After reviewing all the exciting new technology featured at the show, this list was narrowed down to only the most innovative products on display at CES 2017.
Smartphones
Huawei Consumer Business Groups released their newest smartphones, The Mate 8 and The Mate 9, at CES. CEO Richard Yu delivered a keynote as well, where he announced that Huawei spent over $38 billion on R&D over the last ten years in an effort to “drive the next era of innovation to inspire and empower mankind.”
Self-Driving Cars
Nissan Motor Corp shared their “vision for a zero emissions, zero-fatality world.” They introduced the new Nissan Leaf with autonomous driver technology. The Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM) system is derived from NASA technology used on the Mars Rover. The technology is ideal for commercial fleets supplying delivery services, taxi service and ride-sharing.
5G Wireless Networks
The newest and the fastest wireless network is here. Intel has announced the first 5G modem, and AT&T is launching the first customer trails at an Intel facility in Texas. There has been a lot of anticipation for this technology that is 30 to 50 times faster than currently deployed 4G technology.
According to ZD net, Intel is the “first to enable 5G trial anywhere in the world because its single chip supports both millimeter-wave (mmWave) and sub-6GHz spectrum bands, incorporating Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), beam-forming technology, and advanced channel coding.”
Laptops
The newest concept piece from Razer, which has a reputation for cool prototypes and concept pieces according to CNET, unveiled the Blade Pro—a stylish and portable gaming computer. It features 3 built in 17” monitors that pop out from the side of the center monitor. The Blade Pro is a concept piece and will not be publicly available, at least not yet.
The Internet of Things
Amazon’s Alexa is the frontrunner as the IoT operating system of choice at CES this year. Previously only available in Amazon’s Echo Speaker, Alexa has moved into the spotlight with cross-platform accessibility to devices beyond smartphones. According to Wired, “this may well be the year you switch from tapping and typing on touchscreens to simply shouting commands.” Alexa is now compatible with the new Ford cars with the SYNCE 3 system, Whirlpool appliances, and even an LG refrigerator.
