This holiday season, retailers better have their websites and apps ready for customers with mobile devices. Now that most of these devices have access to both users’ wallets and shops’ products, buying for the holidays has never been easier.
According to a survey of more than 2,000 adults conducted by Harris Interactive, 28 percent of smartphone and tablet owners are planning to shop from their devices this Thursday, probably right after finishing their Thanksgiving dinner. Mobile users don’t want to wait until Friday to start perusing goods and so will start looking for deals during and between Thursday’s family activities. Proving the continuing surge of mobile device popularity, this is nearly twice the number of people planning to shop on Thanksgiving as compared to a similar survey last year.
Additionally, the survey found that this trend is primarily driven by students. 40 percent of students plan to shop from their phones on Thanksgiving and more than 20 percent of them indicated that their Thanksgiving plans will be strongly influenced by whether or not they can use their mobile devices. Offering improved shopping experiences through apps, mobile websites and personalized offers, smartphones and tablets are well on their way to replacing Black Friday with Mobile Thursday.
