3 Green Mobile Apps to Boost Sustainability

Being environmentally conscious has become easier than ever with the wide selection of ‘green’ mobile apps. Now you can learn more about how to decrease your carbon footprint and increase the money in your wallet at home or on the go.

Here are three free apps for your smartphone to help you save both the environment and some money.

Green Genie is an awesome resource for expanding your environmentally friendly knowledge and making small changes to your daily life to shrink both your carbon footprint and the amount of money you spend. As the app explains, “every change you make in your life adds up over time – both environmentally and financially.” Green Genie includes 4 tools: resources, green projects, glossary, and a submission feature. The resources tool includes links to multiple carbon footprint calculators, essential reading and green blogs. It also includes a section about which plastics are recyclable and a list of green certified products with information about each company. The projects tool includes over 100 projects and tips to help you increase your environmental awareness. Displayed next to each project is a stack of gold coins representing how much money you can save from completing a given project. One suggestion includes dressing warmer while at home to save $45 and reduce CO2 emissions by 300 lbs. per degree lowered on your thermostat. Green Genie also includes a glossary tool that serves as a personal dictionary of green terms you should know. The community feature links the app to the “Global Community” on Facebook where users can share their experiences, information, and ideas.

GoDriveGreen uses your phone’s GPS to track your everyday driving patterns and uses this information to inform you about how you can cut fuel costs and CO2 emissions. It also indicates the amount of wear and tear on your brakes and tires as a result of your driving patterns. To set up GoDriveGreen, you first enter information about your car including year, make, model, transmission, and drive as well as city and highway MPG. After you set up the app, GoDriveGreen gives you a “Green Score” by how easily/aggressively you are accelerating and decelerating and their impact on your fuel use, tires and brake wear. In addition, the app lends helpful tips like “observing the speed limit can benefit your fuel economy by 7-23%.”

GoodGuide helps you shop for environmentally and socially responsible products. It includes information about over 210,000 products and the companies that manufacture them. GoodGuide calculates a rating of products based on a 1-10 scale based on health, environmental and social impact. The health score includes ratings on ingredients, health impacts, and certifications of a product. The environmental score is based on resource use, environmental impact and company transparency. The social score includes the social impact on consumers, workers and the community. GoodGuide then averages the scores of these three areas and gives you an overall product score. You can search products using the search feature, by product category, or by the scanner feature which enables users to scan the barcode of a particular product to learn more about its environmental and social impacts.

Whether it’s by smarter shopping, more efficient transportation or making small changes at home, green mobile apps are a great resource to help you improve your environmental awareness and save money.
